A Trusted Friend in a Complicated World

For at least a dozen people, working from home took an unexpectedly dangerous turn. Office chairs sold by popular retailers T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Homesense have recently been recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received multiple reports that chairs sold by TJX Companies Inc. are defective, and while a dozen consumers have reported these defects, 10 of them have sustained injuries as a result.

About 82,000 office chairs that were sold by TJX Companies Inc. are being recalled after reports of faulty construction leaving consumers with an assortment of injuries were made to the CPSC. Retailers that sold the office chairs include T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshalls and Homesense. The CPSC also suspects that up to 1,000 additional chairs were possibly sold in Canada, which were also included in the recall.

The CPSC has received a dozen statements from customers who have experienced the back of the chair breaking apart from the base. In 10 of those cases, people reported injuries as the result of this defect that ranged from bruising to a concussion.

The CPSC has decided to recall these office chairs to prevent further injury in addition to ensuring that other consumers aren’t stuck with a defective, faulty chair.

The chairs that have been recalled by the CPSC all contain labels underneath the seat that read, “ANJI GUOTAI Furniture Co. Ltd,” and “Made in China.” These specific product numbers, which were printed on tags that were hung from the chairs, are the ones that you should be on the lookout for:

The CPSC reported that the problematic chairs cost between $60 and $70. Affected chairs came in a variety of colors and textures: white, black, gray, floral, pink, navy, light blue, orange, mint, brown and cream chairs that were made in velvet, linen, vinyl, boucle or faux leather.

The chairs that are being recalled were sold from June 2019 to December 2022, and those who have purchased them are encouraged to bring them to any Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods or Homesense location for a full refund. Anyone who is not able to take them to the aforementioned retailers will be able to call the company for further instructions as to how to get a full refund. TJX Companies Inc. can be reached at 888-359-4763 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.

The CPSC also advised anyone who has purchased these chairs not to use them to prevent further injuries.

Whether you have one of the recalled chairs or not, it may be time to reevaluate your work-from-home setup entirely to set yourself up for success.
